AWARDS and ACCOMPLISHMENTS
2002
• The Clinic received a $200,000 grant from the Martin County Board of County
Commissioners in order to support its continuing operation.
• The Clinic received a $25,000 grant from the United Way of Martin County and
became a United Way of Martin County agency.
• The Clinic received $12,000 from the Hobe Sound Community Chest.
• Angie Fening and the Helping Hands held a luncheon and gave the proceeds to
the VIM Clinic.
• The Friends of the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic initiated their first formal
mailing for financial solicitation purposes.
• The Volunteers in Medicine Clinic received its 501c3 status.
• The Volunteers in Medicine Clinic formed an alliance with the Visiting Nurse
Association to treat VIM patients at no charge.
• VIM & VIGOR, the Clinic’s first newsletter, was completed and distributed in
August 2002.
2001
• The Clinic received a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Palm
Beach and Martin Counties to continue operating.
• The Clinic received a $100,000 emergency grant from the Martin County
Commission to continue operating.
• The Clinic received $10,000 from the Hobe Sound Community Chest.
• The Helping Hands, a group of women led by Angie Fening, held its first annual
Charity Ball for VIM to help in its emergency endeavor to keep its doors open.
2000
• The Clinic received a $15,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Palm
Beach and Martin Counties to fund the Clinic’s diabetic program.
• The Friends of the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic formed a separate not for
profit entity 501c3 to raise funds and increase public awareness of the
Volunteers in Medicine Clinic.
1999
• The Clinic received $40,000 from the Susan G. Komen Foundation to fund
mammograms and breast surgeries.
• Dr. Fred Carter received the South Florida Physician Humanitarian of the Year
Award from the Florida Business Healthcare Association.
1998
• The Clinic received an $11,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Palm
Beach and Martin Counties to purchase dental equipment.
1997
• The Clinic received national recognition from the Points of Light Foundation
for “Make a Difference Day” and $10,000 for a women’s health program. This award
was presented by First Lady Hillary Clinton. There were ten award winners from
20,000 entries.
1996
• Dr. Carter received the Golden Rule Award from JC Penny as Volunteer of the
Year and received a message from President Clinton. The Clinic received
$1,000.00.
• Dr. Carter received special recognition from the Charles Donegan award from
the Florida Society of Internal Medicine and a special recognition award from
the American Society of Internal Medicine.
